If you are a student of BITS Pilani, then understanding CGPA calculation is very crucial for you because BITS Pilani does not follow a simple average method for calculation of their CGPA. They use a relative grading system that includes grades and weights for CGPA calculation. Let’s start with the understanding of a CGPA.
Why is CGPA calculation important for you?
CGPA (cumulative grade point average) is a report card which shows a student’s academic performance in all semesters. It measures a student’s knowledge, skills and capabilities and helps him in decision making like which field he should choose for further study and which course he should pursue etc.
How to calculate CGPA for BITS Pilani?
Now let’s understand how to calculate your CGPA with the help of simple steps.
Step 1: First, you should know your grades and their grade point.
BITS Pilani has a relative grading system. In this type of grading system academic performance is measured in terms of grades then grades are transferred into points. All grades are based on a student’s performance in the class. Let’s understand grades and points with a general mapping of a grade to a point.
Letter Grade | Grade Point |
A | 10 |
A- | 9 |
B | 8 |
B- | 7 |
C | 6 |
C- | 5 |
D | 4 |
E | 2 |
R (Fail) | 0 |
These grades are assigned on the basis of class performance. They are not associated with a specific percentage like 90% for A and 80% for B. So it can be possible that you get an A for 85% in one course and a B for 90% in another course.
Step 2: Identify credit units related to the subject
BITS has a specific credit for each subject which indicates the weight for that subject in a particular course curriculum.
For example:
Theory courses have 3 to 4 credits, labs and workshops have 1 to 2 credits, and project courses, seminars, and thesis work have 2 to 10 credits based on the complexity of the course.
Step 3: Multiply Grade Points with Credits of the Course
Now, multiply the grade point of the course with the number of credits of that course.
Weighted Score for a Course = Grade Point × Course Credits
Let’s take a Example:
Course | Grade | Grade Point | Credits | Weighted Score |
Math-I | A | 10 | 4 | 10 × 4 = 40 |
Physics | B | 8 | 3 | 8 × 3 = 24 |
Chemistry Lab | B- | 7 | 1 | 7 × 1 = 7 |
Engineering Mechanics | A- | 9 | 3 | 9 × 3 = 27 |
Electrical Engg | C | 6 | 2 | 6 × 2 = 12 |
Step 4: Add All the Weighted Scores and Total Credits
Now, calculate the sum of Step 3.
Sum of Weight = 40 + 24 + 7 + 27 + 12 = 110
Sum of Credit = 4 + 3 + 1 + 3 + 2 = 13
Step 5: Apply the CGPA Formula
Hope you got the total weighted grade points and total credits, Now put value in the the formula:
CGPA = [∑(Grade Points × Credits)] / ∑(Total Credits)
CGPA = 110/13 = 8.46
