What is CGPA?

CGPA is Cumulative Grade Point Average. It is a report card which denotes your entire academic performance across all the semesters. You can say that the CGPA is the average of your grade points and the weights of your course credits. CGPA helps universities, employers, and even students get an overview of students’ academic performance.

How to calculate CGPA?

Here we have some simple steps to calculate CGPA with an example.

Step 1: Identify your grades and credits for those grades.

 for example, a grade (O, E, A, B, etc.) and

grade point (O=10, E=9, A=8, B=7, etc.)

and the credits are (e.g., 2, 3, or 4 credits)

Step 2: Convert Your Grades with Appropriate Grade Points

Use the KIIT grading scale in an appropriate manner.

Grade Marks Range Grade Point
O 90–100 10
E 80–89 9
A 70–79 8
B 60–69 7
C 50–59 6
D 40–49 5
F <40 2 (Fail)

Step 3: Calculate SGPA for Each Semester

Let’s put values in below mentioned to calculate SGPA

SGPA calculation formula:

[Σ(Grade Point of each subject × Credit for each subject)/(Σ Total Credits in that semester)]

Step 4: Multiply your SGPA by your Semester Credit

Once you get your SGPA multiply it with your semester credits.

Example: let’s suppose your sem 1 sgpa and credits are as mentioned below.

 Sem 1: SGPA = 7.5 and total credits = 20
              Weights of  SGPA = 7.5 × 20 = 150

Step 5: Do sum of weighted sgpa and Credits

Do this for all semesters Let’s take an example:

  • 1 sem : 7.5 × 20 = 150
  • 2 sem : 8.0 × 22 = 176
  • 3 sem : 7.2 × 18 = 129.6

Sum of the weights = 150 + 176 + 129.6 = 455.6
Sum of  the Credits = 20 + 22 + 18 = 60

Step 6: Calculate final CGPA

Use formula of CGPA = Total Weigh / Total Credit

CGPA = 455.6 / 60

           = 7.59

Example: 2 Let’s suppose you have the following SGPAs:

Sem SGPA Credits
Sem 1 7.72 18
Sem 2 8.10 22
Sem 3 7.50 20

Sum of all the Weights = (7.72×18) + (8.10×22) + (7.50×20) = 467.16
Sum of all the Credits = 18 + 22 + 20 = 60

                       CGPA = 467.16 / 60 = 7.78
