If you’re a Gujarat Technological University student who is confused between the terms like SGPA and CGPA and doesn’t know how to use them then Don’t worry you’re not alone. Mostly students find it difficult especially when it comes to conversion of their SGPA from their CGPA.

GTU has their own evaluation system that measures student’s grades based on their credit and credits are based on their performance across all the semesters. Let’s understand it in more detail with the explanation of CGPA.

What is CGPA?

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is an average of each semester grade. It provides a comprehensive report of your academic performance. It is based on each subject’s academic credits and their grade points.

GTU has three types of grade point systems let’s understand them one by one:

  • SPI (Semester Performance Index) : It denotes each semester’s grade point.
  • CPI (Cumulative Performance Index) : it denotes credit points up to a particular semester.
  • CGPA (cumulative grade point average) : It is a final cumulative GPA. It is based on all semesters of the entire course.

Hope you understood CGPA, CPI, and SPI. Let’s move forward to the understanding of the GTU grading scale.

How to calculate CGPA in GTU?

Here we have some steps to calculate CGPA for GTU. Let’s discuss them one by one.

Step 1: Identify your grade point.

GTU follows this 10-point grading scale. Let’s discuss it with the help of the table.

Marks (%) Grade Grade Point
85–100 AA 10
75–84 AB 9
65–74 BB 8
55–64 BC 7
45–54 CC 6
40–44 CD 5
35–39 DD 4
Below 35 FF 0 (Fail)

Step 2: Convert your marks into grade points.

Convert each subject’s marks into grade points. You can use the above mentioned table for that. Let’s take an example: If you score is 50 marks then your grade is CC and your score is 6 and in case If your score is 90 then your grade is AA and your grade point is 10.

Step 3: Calculate Credit Points

Multiply each subject’s credit with the grade point of that subject.

Credit Points = Each Subject Credit × Each Subject Grade Point

Let’s assume you have the following marks:

  • Subject A: 3 credits and AB grade (9 points) → 3 × 9 = 27
  • Subject B: 4 credits and BB grade (8 points) → 4 × 8 = 32

Step 3: Calculate SPI for each semester.

SPI = Total Credit Points of all subjects ÷ Total Credits in that semester

For example, sum of credit points = 27 + 32 = 59.
                              Sum of Credits = 3 + 4 = 7
                                    SPI = 59 / 7 = 8.42

Step 4: Now, calculate CPI or CGPA.

To get CGPA Combine SPI scores from multiple semesters.

CGPA = (SPI₁ × Credit₁ + SPI₂ × Credit₂ + … + SPIn × Credits) ÷ (Total Credits of all semesters)

 Let’s suppose if you score following grades during your academic terms.

Subject Credits Grade Grade Point Credit Point
Math 3 AB 9 27
Physics 4 BB 8 32
English 2 AA 10 20

Sum of Credit Points = 27 + 32 + 20 = 79
Sum of Credits = 3 + 4 + 2 = 9
                  SPI = 79 ÷ 9 = 8.77
